Alison Locke

"The works are based on ideas of death and how we live on in the memory of others after we have died. Many households in Australia have pictures of the dead in their living rooms, as a way to preserve the memory of loved ones. But these photos can trigger a range of subconscious emotions – more to do with our own death than our loved ones – that help us overcome our fear of death. Humans are the only animals who are aware of our inevitable ending, and how much that violates what we’re striving for while alive. My work is about the images we create to help us deal with the inevitability of death. They are also about what we leave behind after we have died, the marks we leave on the world – the scuffmarks on a pair of boots existing in a rubbish heap long after we have died. The works are also very much about light, texture and space. They’re intended to evoke some recognition on the part of the viewer, a sense of loss and emptiness. I’ve relied on an almost monochrome palette suggesting a ferrotype photograph, a sense of time elapsed, of looking back into the past. There’s a formality to the composition that suggests the staginess of 19th century photography. There’s a beauty and a sorrow in many of those images, which I hope to have captured in some way. “Some of us serve as crusaders and some as flies, squashed against a fence” From the poem Still Moving by Patti Smith."

Alison became interested in computer-generated art while studying painting at art school. Her most recent body of works are created entirely on the computer, no photography is involved. The software she uses is usually used for creating computer game art or movie special effects. She produces animations as well as still images, and her work has been shown in exhibitions around Australia.
