Hal Epstein
Hal Epstein trained as a chemical engineer, did an MBA at Insead in France and then forged a career in the plastics, packaging & telecommunications industries. Though consumed by business activity, his creativity was irrepressible and he would regularly come home with animal sculptures made from melted telephone cord.
A consummate seafarer & pioneer of Sydney whale watching, Epstein has long been preoccupied with photographing ocean wildlife around NSW including pelagic birds, albatrosses, whales and dolphins. His sharp eye and rock steady camera work are the creative byproduct of 15 years out on the open ocean running Halicat Whale Watching and Oceanic Nature Watch Tours.
For many years Hal shot on a Pentax K1000, before going digital in 2004 with a Nikon D100. In 2006 he upgraded again to the D200, and consolidated his suite of lenses with a 300 F2.8VR & 18-200 VR zoom.
His insurmountable drive to photograph birds and animals in their natural habitat has propelled him to far-flung regions of remote continents including Alaska, Antarctica, Asia, Africa and his homeland Australia. This is his first solo exhibition, featuring shots from an ongoing series of light-plane expeditions into outback Australia.
