Jess Goodacre
I am an artist currently undertaking Masters of Visual Art at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney. I am majoring in Painting and am exploring the notion of how can the artist be art? My research centres around the hypothesis of: Self + Life = Art. Can I, the artist be art? The self can be represented in the artwork through the conceptual processes of conceiving the artwork, through the performance or activity of creating and through the artwork itself. To what extent does the surrounding environment influence and impact the self and consequently the artwork of the artist? The events of the everyday are the foundation of my work, the very concept of being.
My studio work encompasses painting, drawing, photography and the construction of garments. I am currently painting a series of portraits of friends. Exploring the notion of perception of the self in relation to others and how such perception impacts our self and our subsequent judgement of the other. I am also making dresses constructed out of canvas. I treat these garments with their own marks. Installations will develop with the wearable art. The garment is a metaphor for myself. It encompasses the concepts of clothing, painting and painting materials. The garment encapsulates my own sense of self. It is a painting that I can wear in the world. By creating and wearing the garment, my art and self is immediately affected by my surrounds. My world is directly engaging with my "self" and my art through the garment.
